NHI's "Interactions & Depletions" component provides third party clinical research
and education on integrative medicine.
- Over 5,000 single entries representing interactions between drugs and dietary supplements, drugs and herbs, and dietary supplements and herbs.
- Categorized by quality and quantity of science available for support and verification
- Study abstracts linked to footnotes
Amoxicillin Search with Sample
A prescription based search provides the user with possible candidates for interactions,
as well as alternative searches in case the user has entered an incorrect drug name.
In this example, a search on amoxicillin produced a list of potential interactions
and the user has selected Red Yeast Rice.
All interactions are rated based upon the amount of pre-clinical and clinical data
available. Potential/Theoretical interactions may have some basic case study
support but are primarily based upon the pharmacology of the ingredients. This example
of how Red Yeast Rice extract may possibly interact with amoxicillin is based upon
known pharmacology of both ingredients and how those ingredients work in the body;
in this case, in the liver. Other ratings include Study Supported, indicating
that there are numerous examples of case studies to support the interaction, and
Clinically Proven, indicating that there is strong clinical evidence to support
the interaction information.

CoQ-10 Search Result with Sample
Users may also search by dietary supplement. In this example, a search on Co Q 10
provides numerous potential interactions and depletions. The selection, HMG-CoA
Reductase Inhibitors, demonstrates how Study Supported interactions are displayed
and referenced. As indicated, the related abstracts are also provided to the user.

Vitamin C and Copper Sample
NHI not only provides thousands of drug/nutrient interactions but also provides
nutrient/nutrient interactions and depletions as seen in this example of how Vitamin
C and Copper interact with one another.

Calcium (Proven) Sample
In this example, the user has search for interactions with Calcium and has selected
Floroquinolones which results in the display of a Clinically Proven interaction.

Potential Theoretical Interactions
Potential/Theoretical interactions are based on pharmacology. These may have studies
to support them, but those studies have not determined the specific pathway or mechanism
of action involved.
Study Supported Interactions
Study Supported interactions are supported by animal or in vitro studies that provide
significant information regarding a specific interaction.
Clinically Proven Interactions
Clinically Proven interactions are those that are supported by significant clinical
studies, the results of which have been able to be duplicated.
